Editorial standards
How we verify NCF Local businesses.
What our Verified badge actually means — and what every listing has to clear before it goes live.
What we won't list
Three hard rules. We say no to applications that hit any of them.
No national or regional chains
If your HQ is outside the 8 NCF counties, or you're a franchise of a national brand, you don't get a listing. Period. National brands have the rest of the internet. NCF Local is for the family shop down the road.
No scrape-imported listings
Every listing is added by a real person on our team after a real conversation with the business owner. We don't pull from third-party databases or web-scrape competitors.
No pay-to-rank visibility
Premium tier gets top placement within a category — that's it. Standard and Free listings still appear in every relevant search. We don't hide listings behind a paywall and we don't sell leads.
Three layers of checking
Every listed business clears the baseline. Verified listings (any tier that pays for the check) also clear layers 2 and 3.
01
Baseline — every listing
- Real business, real owner — confirmed by phone or in person
- Headquartered in one of the 8 NCF counties
- Not a national chain or franchise of one
- Owner reachable at a stable email address
02
License + insurance
- Florida DBPR license number on file (when the trade requires one)
- License confirmed active at myfloridalicense.com
- Current general liability insurance certificate on file
03
Track record
Verified- In operation 2+ years under current ownership
- Florida DBPR complaints reviewed for last 12 months
- Google / BBB review patterns reviewed for review-fraud signals
- Annual re-check — badge is not permanent
The Verified badge is sold as a one-time check, separate from your monthly listing tier. Premium subscriptions include it; Standard and Free can purchase it as an add-on.
Common questions
- Is the Verified badge tied to which tier I pay for?
- Verified is a separate product from the listing tier. Premium subscribers get verification included. Standard and Free subscribers can purchase a one-time verification check. A Verified badge means we did the actual checking described above, regardless of which tier the listing pays for.
- What disqualifies a business from being listed at all?
- Being a national chain, a franchise of a national brand, or headquartered outside Marion, Sumter, Lake, Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, or Volusia counties. We also decline listings that fail our identity check (no real owner we can reach), or that have an active suspended license with Florida DBPR.
- Can a verified business lose the badge?
- Yes. The Verified badge is reviewed annually. If a license lapses, an insurance certificate expires without replacement, or a pattern of substantiated complaints emerges, we remove the badge. We notify the business owner before the badge is removed and give them a chance to address the issue.
- How do I report a problem with a listed business?
- Email steve@ncflocal.com with the business name, what happened, and your contact info. We respond within 2 business days. Substantiated complaints affect the business's Verified status; unsubstantiated reports are kept on file but don't immediately impact the listing.
Spot a listing that doesn't belong?
We rely on the community to keep the directory clean. Tell us about a national chain that slipped through, a business that closed, or a complaint pattern worth a second look.
